Cost of Drilling a Geothermal Well: What Drives the Price

A geothermal well isn't drilled for water — it's drilled to access stable ground temperatures for heating and cooling. That distinction changes almost everything about how the job is priced. Unlike a standard Water Well, geothermal drilling is quoted as part of a larger ground-source heat pump (GSHP) system, and the well itself is just one line item in that total. What Drives Per-Foot Drilling Cost on a Geothermal Borehole

Geothermal per-foot rates run higher than standard water well drilling for several reasons. First, the borehole diameter is typically larger — often 4 to 6 inches — to accommodate the loop pipe and grout. Second, thermal grout (usually a bentonite-sand mix) has to be pumped from the bottom up to seal the entire borehole, which adds material and time. Third, in hard rock geology the drill penetrates more slowly, increasing rig time per foot.

Regional geology is probably the single biggest variable. Soft sedimentary soils drill fast; granite and basalt grind the bit down. Contractors in the Southeast often quote lower per-foot rates than those in New England or the upper Midwest, where bedrock is common at shallow depths. Always get at least three written quotes from licensed geothermal drilling contractors — not general HVAC companies — before committing.

Open-Loop Systems: A Different Approach, a Different Cost Structure

An open-loop geothermal system pulls actual groundwater from one well, runs it through the heat exchanger, and discharges it into a second well or surface body. The drilling cost per foot is closer to a standard water well — you're drilling for water access, not borehole thermal exchange. The tradeoff: open-loop systems require adequate groundwater yield (typically 3–5 GPM minimum per ton of HVAC capacity), water quality testing, and in many states, a discharge permit. Hard water, iron, or sand can damage the heat exchanger quickly.

Getting an Accurate Quote

To get comparable quotes, give each contractor the same inputs: your home's heating/cooling load estimate, lot size and topography, preferred loop type, and any known local geology. Ask explicitly what's included — loop pipe, grout, manifold, bore count, and surface restoration — since some contractors quote drilling-only while others quote the full loop field installed.
